Star Shaped Optic Molds

Check out the wonderful tutorial that Karen Hardy wrote: optic-mold-tutorial.pdf These star shaped optic molds are great for making twisted cane! Either five or six grooves allows you to lay on five or six stripes of different colors. The six groove model allows you to alternate two or three colors. A 3-degree taper is used to keep the shape fairly constant thoughout its length. For those who wish to make layered millifiori or use larger gathers, molds with a 5 or 7-degree draft angle are available. Please e-mail for details. This view shows the bottom of the molds. Please note the small amount of tip distortion on the tips of the stars. This distortion should not be a problem in use. Specifications: The stars are about 3/4" in diameter at the bottom of the mold and 7/8" in diameter at the top. The molds themselves are 1.5" high and may be 1.75" or 2" square. Please note, while aluminum's melting point is below that of glass, it conducts heat away from the glass so quickly that it does not melt. Skill Level: To take advantage of these molds you should be experienced in pulling cane or stringer. You will need a heat proof surface to use these on. A graphite plate is recommended.
